HELLO! FELLOW FORUM MEMBERS,

I AM A NEW MEMBER OF THE FORUM, AND STILL FINDING MY WAY AROUND?I AM ENGLISH BUT NOW HOPEFULLY MY FUTURE IS IN NORGE!!.......

I HAVE SPENT 40+ YEARS OF SOME FRUSTRATION,HAVING TO CONTENT MYSELF WITH MODELLING FROM THE "ARMCHAIR"? NOW IN NORGE I FINALLY HOPE TO FULFILL A DREAM AND OWN MY OWN SPECIAL LAYOUT.

I HAVE NEVER BEING ABLE TO DECIDE,WHAT SCALE AND GAUGE TO MODEL? BUT I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A BRITISH SCENE!WHEN EVENTUALLY I GOT DOWN TO IT!

(AND I HAVE ALWAYS IGNORED THE "AMERICAN SCENE"..THEN THE OTHER DAY I STUMBLED OVER SOME LINKS, AND ENDED UP IN A WORLD OF MODEL RAILWAY DREAMS??????)
I CAME FACE TO FACE WITH THE U.S. HOBBY! AND WOW WAS IT A REVALATION!!!NOW FINALLY I THINK I KNOW THEIR IS A "MODELLING-GOD! AND I FEEL I REALLY WISH TO MODEL SOME ASPECT OF THE AMERICAN RAILROADS: MAINLY NARROW GAUGE AND SOME STANDARD GAUGE? I MUST MENTION A SITE I DISCOVERED JUST IN CASE ANY OF YOU ARE UNAWARE OF IT? IT IS "SIERRA WEST SCALE MODELS"WEB PAGE: sierrawestscalemodels.com
THEY SPECIALISE IN THE MOST FANTASTIC DETAILED BUILDINGS KITS E.T.C. I HAVE EVER SEEN! AND ARE WELL WORTH A LOOK..

I WOULD LOVE TO OBTAIN ANY IMFORMATION ON THE U.S.SCENE FROM FELLOW MEMBERS TO HELP ME GET AN IDEAR OF WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO MODEL, I.E. SCALES&GAUGES EXPLAINED? SO I CAN DECIDE WHICH AREA TO MODEL,?? AND OF COURSE ANY BOOK OR BOOKS WHICH COULD BE RECOMMENDED HAS A GOOD INTRODUCTION TO THE SMALLER SCALES, AND GIVES LOTS OF IMFORMATION FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME? JUST STARTING OUT IN THIS BRAVE NEW WORLD??

ANY HELP AND ADVICE ON ANY ASPECT OF STARTING OUT IN THE AMERICAN SCENE, WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I LOOK FORWARD VERY MUCH TO HEARING FROM SOME OF YOU..

REGARDS (NORSK) STEVE

Seems no answer yet.
I can give you some hints.

American narrow gauge centers around two gauges used in USA 2 foot and three foot. For three foot the scales used are Nn3 (1:160 on the somewhat broad 6.5mm gauge often using Märklin miniclub chassis)

A norwegian site for Finescale N and N narrowgauge as well as 2mm scale :
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TofiN/

H0n3 1:87 on 10.5mm gauge

Sn3 1:64 on 14.2(?)mm gauge

On3 1:48 on 19mm (?)gauge

1: 24 on 45mm (too broad) gauge (same as LGB which is 1:22.5 scale))

For two foot same scales from H0 and up. In N a slight beginning of experiments seems to apear.

H0n21/2 or H09 which is correct for 750-760mm gauge is often used in USA to model the Maine 2 footers taking in advantage mechanisms from N scale 9mm gauge.

Sylvester!

You should check out a magazine called "Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette".
It covers the American narrow gauge scene in all its variations and aspects.
Great magazine! Also full of useful modelling information for those who model other prototypes than American.

Theire (unfortunately rather limited) site on the net:

regards,
Henning L

PS: Would you please consider releasing the "shift" key - All caps seems a bit like you're yelling! Which, I assume, you are not?
